MAX NEWPORT: Put another dime in the jukebox, baby PDF Print E-mail
By Max Newport - Jun. 13, 2010, 10:44am

A few weeks ago on MSNBC‘S “Morning Joe” there was a nice little round table discussion on the greatest rock and roll songs of all time. Yes, on occasion, I will actually watch MSNBC, which I am sure has a significant statistical impact on their viewership numbers. If I am not cranky enough when I wake up, I will watch a little “Morning Joe.”

Before I begin my rant, here is the link: http://www.mefeedia.com/video/31375411

I think Rolling Stone magazine has a lot of audacity to create a list of  the 500 greatest rock and roll songs, and then have the top two songs contain the name of their magazine in either the title or the name of the artist.

MAX NEWPORT: Say it ain't so, Charlie PDF Print E-mail
By Max Newport - May. 8, 2010, 12:27pm

If it were up to me, Charlie Wilson would be sitting on the Vero Beach City Council rather than attempting to become a county commissioner in the rapidly approaching Republican primary.

I have met Charlie and I would have voted for him if I lived in the city limits even though I disagree with his primary campaign issue of the city selling the power plant to Florida Power and Light.  We live in the county but have city electricity and are quite happy with the service.

After the 2004 hurricanes, our power was restored in less than two days.  My co-workers on FPL went weeks without power.  I was able to take hot showers and swim in a heated pool after Wilma in 2005 while they were using flashlights and generators.  But that is a story for another day.

MAX NEWPORT: Max on the Run PDF Print E-mail
By Max Newport - Apr. 14, 2010, 9:22am

As a child of the 60’s, how long will it take for me to get tired of listening to the music of the Beatles? The answer is probably never. My iPod contains virtually everything the Fab Four has ever recorded in addition to the 16 digitally remastered albums that were released last year (and the subject of a splendid blog right here by yours truly at VeroNews.Com on September 14th of last year). The folks at my office are convinced that I am locked in a time warp, and perhaps I am.

We found out several months ago that Paul McCartney would be doing the second show of his new “Up and Coming” world tour in Miami on April 3 but decided not to go due to the inevitable high cost of reserving good seats. In addition the concert was going to be at Dolphin/Joe Robbie/Land Shark/Sun Life/Make Up Your Freaking Mind Stadium, the same locale of the most recent Super Bowl. The last stadium concert I had attended was Grand Funk Railroad at the Atlanta Braves stadium in 1971. We prefer smaller venues.

MAX NEWPORT: Where does all that daylight go? PDF Print E-mail
By Max Newport - Mar. 15, 2010, 7:25pm

Whoever dreamed up daylight saving time has probably already passed on to that great moon beam in the sky either cavorting in eternal sunshine frivolity or grousing in the darkness of Hell.  Yes, screwing around with time will elicit madness and here I am.  Why does some entity have the power to take an hour away from a dear weekend in late winter only to give it back in the early fall?

If it were money, and who hasn’t heard the phrase that time is money, we would be demanding interest.  When we “fall behind” come October, what do we get back on that hour we so wisely invested in March?  Nothing.  Zilch.

Here is a modest proposal that “We the people” (a phrase used in every other sentence by our most newly elected city council member) should undertake . . . but it will only work if we all do it.  Later this year when we “turn back the hands of time” let’s add a five per cent surcharge for the use of our hour and set our clocks back an extra three minutes.  We can call it ‘Daylight Savings Recovery Time” or DSRT for short and everybody likes the word “recovery”.

MAX NEWPORT: 42nd Street Revisited PDF Print E-mail
By Max Newport - Feb. 25, 2010, 12:15am

At this point, if you haven’t seen or have tickets in hand for “42nd Street” at the Riverside Theatre, chances are it will pass you by and that is a shame. . . for you. It is a spectacular show; perhaps the most lavish and energetic production that ever graced a stage here in my little town. We saw the show on Broadway a few years ago and this production is no less spectacular.

The energy glowing from the stage is immediate as the curtain rises to a dance number that would put most of us in intensive care should we dare attempt to try it. This was just the opening number! These folks danced, sang and entertained for close to three hours and each number seemed just a little more spectacular than the song and dance that preceded it. These folks are in great shape. They had to be to exert that much energy. In addition, we saw the show on the opening weekend Saturday night which means they had a matinee that afternoon.
